One of my dreams has come true thanks to Ms. Anita Hughes. Ms. Hughes is my all time favorite author. I couldn’t have been more excited and honored when she agreed to answer some questions that I could share with all of you. Hope you enjoy!
What inspired you to write your first book?
I live on the grounds of the St. Regis Resort and I am surrounded by beauty. I thought, if you were consumed by grief and went somewhere really gorgeous, would you feel better? Or do you take your grief with you wherever you go.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I think my style is very descriptive. I love describing beautiful locations and delicious foods and gorgeous clothes.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Each novel has a different message but I find an underlying theme is how important female friendships are. I also definitely believe in love and happy endings!
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
I often start with a nugget of something that happened to me or someone I know and it builds from there.
What books have most influenced your life most?
I read constantly so I have been influenced by many books. A few years ago, I was really affected by the work of Somerset Maugham. I read all his books and I remember thinking that all you need to learn you can learn from his books.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
There are so many wonderful writers! I used to love the work of Rona Jaffe because she wrote intelligent women’s fiction that was compulsively readable. I also admired Jacqueline Sussan – she wrote big, juicy books with smart characters.
What book are you reading now?
I just finished THE SECRETS OF MiDWIVES by Sally Hepworth which was wonderful, and I am reading THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN by Paula Hawkins and it is excellent.
What are your current projects?
I am so excited that I have two books coming out this year. FRENCH COAST will be released on April 7 and ROME IN LOVE (my novel about Audrey Hepburn) will be released on August 4th.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No, I really love FRENCH COAST. It came out exactly as I wanted to.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I won a nationwide writing contest in Australia (where I grew up) when I was eight and that really inspired me to write.
Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
My favorite author is a British author named Penny Vincenzi. When I start her books, I don’t want to do anything else. They are usually about 600 or 700 hundred pages long but I have read a few of them twice!
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Read constantly. I also think you should write the story that you can’t stop thinking about.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I love hearing from readers, it’s one of the best parts about being an author! I also love taking them to wonderful places, I am always thinking of the next location we are going to go.
Any sneak peeks you can give us about your new upcoming novel French Coast?
FRENCH COAST is set in two of my favorite places – San Francisco and the French Riviera and it is full of gorgeous scenery and family secrets. I hope my readers will enjoy it!
Please make sure to pick up French Coast, available April 7. I can’t wait!
Thank you again Ms. Hughes. I am forever grateful.
